Pull on that tight sweater, it’s …
THE VINTAGE VILLAGE LANA TURNER FAIR!
When: Sunday 8th February 2015, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm
Where: Stockport Market Hall SK1 1EU
How much: £2.00 entry, £1.50 concessions, under 12s FREE!
Our birthday girl was discovered in the Top Hat Malt Shop on Sunset Boulevard as a 16 year old Hollywood High School student in 1937, and her breathtaking beauty and figure soon rocketed her to a stellar movie career. Lana was to prove her acting talent later - after her mesmerising performance in the film noir classic The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) she was taken a lot more seriously.
Sadly, her personal life was, to put it mildly, tempestuous. But despite all the trauma, Lana declared that “Romance was very important” to her, so she’s our February Valentine Queen.
Look out for the Vintage 78 DJs, playing songs of romance and heartbreak (I’m sure Lana would approve).
We also have an unmissable ...
Movie Matinée Lana Turner Blockbuster Double Bill
Presented by Stockport Market at 20th Century Stores
11.00 am The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) Directed by Vincente Minnelli.
Lana Turner, Kirk Douglas, Walter Pidgeon, Dick Powell.
A ruthless Hollywood producer’s story is told by the significant people in his career. Revered film critic Pauline Kael dismissed it as “spangled” and “overwrought” which sounds pretty great to me!
1.00 pm Imitation of Life (1959) directed by Douglas Sirk.
Lana Turner, John Gavin, Sandra Dee.
Romantic melodrama dealing with issues of race, class and gender. That sounds a bit dry - it’s not at all. The fourth most successful film of 1959 and the biggest hit of Lana Turner’s career, this is a dramatic and visual treat - in glorious Eastmancolor!
After you’ve trekked around the vintage splendours at our fair, you’ll be needing a bit of sustenance. Head for the award-winning British handmade pies from Lord of the Pies, or perhaps you might fancy a delectable gourmet hotdog from Fat Annie’s. Get your caffeine fix from Kandoo Mobile Coffee, and treat yourself to something sweet for afters from THE most popular trader at our fair, Stuart Thornley Cake Design, who has been with us for four whole years!
