The Vintage Village Super Plaza Fair

Roll cameras.  Action!  It's . . .

The Vintage Village Super Plaza Fair!

When: Sunday 13th October 2013, 10.00 am to 4.00 pm
Where: Stockport Covered Market Hall SK1 1EU
How much?: £1 entry, under 12s FREE

We're lucky enough to have one of the finest examples of 1930s Art Deco Super Cinemas in the country right here in Stockport - the magnificent Plaza.  Opened in October 1932, it celebrates its 81st birthday this month, so we're joining in the celebrations.

Thanks to the tireless work of volunteers, The Stockport Plaza Trust is gradually returning this landmark building to its original glory.  It has survived the Second World War, a spell as a Bingo hall, and as a nightclub, and now it is set to be Stockport's most glamorous and authentically vintage entertainment venue for decades to come.

Here's what's in store at our Super Plaza Fair on Sunday 13th:

The Plaza will be attending, with a special display and a range of Plaza merchandise.  Every purchase goes towards ongoing restoration work so please give them your support!

The fabulous, all-female Heartbeat Chorus from Marple will be singing some classic songs from the 1930s!  UPDATE: Oh dear, it looks like they're too busy - late notice cancellation, apologies.

The Vintage Village Visitors' Award for Traders - you voted, we counted 'em up!  The presentation will be at 2.30 pm in the Market Place food court area.

We have eight new stallies!  Please welcome Abbi-Lynne's Vintage Emporium, Little Miss Vintage, Cath Tiffany Vintage, Miss Brown's Vintage, Mr Vintage, NightOwl, Pudding Vintage and Violet House.  More details about them below.

And because it's the Super Plaza fair, we simply had to have a suitable 1930s film show.  Taking inspiration from the dancing nymphs reliefs in the Plaza's auditorium, what could be more appropriate than Busby Berkeley?

Movie Matinée - Busby Berkeley Double Bill
Presented by Stockport Market
On show in our pop-up cinema, ground floor, The Produce Hall

11.30 am  42nd Street (1933) Dir. Lloyd Bacon.
Starring Warner Baxter, Bebe Daniels, George Brent, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell.
Busby Berkeley's first major movie was a smash hit, thanks to his innovative and dazzling choreography, not to mention the memorable songs.  But there's more: "It was a very real look at backstage life, filled with slangy, bitter dialogue and wisecracks, street-wise characters, topical references, dancers, and crew, and many references to the Depression." Classic Movie Favourites.

1.00 pm  Footlight Parade (1933) Dir. Lloyd Bacon.
Starring James Cagney, Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell.
The "ultimate Warners musical" with Warners' trademark mix of gritty realism, street-smart humour and spectacular escapist fantasy featuring hordes of beautiful dancing girls, courtesy of Mr Berkeley.  James Cagney is phenomenal in this movie!

It's enough to cheer anyone out of the Great Depression.  And that's not all - there's also the overwhelming array of vintage clothing and accessories for ladies and gents, jewellery, homeware, decorative items, furniture, luggage, toys, collectables and curiosities you have come to expect from The Vintage Village.

Suggested dress code: 1930s - my absolute favourite era for fashions!  You can pick up some styling tips from our little gallery down there on the right.

You want refreshments?  We've got award-winning Lord of the Pies with their traditional and modern British handmade gourmet pies, served hot with a choice of mushy peas, mash and gravy.  There's the welcome return of Caarma Curries (hooray!) and Kandoo Mobile Coffee will be on hand to cater for all your hot espresso-based beverage needs (they do teas too).

Save some room for one of Stuart Thornley Cake Designs'  divine creations too (or take a treat home to enjoy later!)
