70 years ago, on the 8th May 1945, Nazi Germany’s armed forces unconditionally surrendered to the Allies and Victory in Europe was celebrated after six arduous years of war.
And blimey, did they celebrate! Despite strict rationing, street parties were held across the country, hoarded bottles were cracked open, cakes were baked, there was dancing and singing, and everything was covered in miles of bunting, banners, rosettes and flags. As Churchill told the nation “This is your victory!”
Stockport Market, Stockport Museum and Stockport Creative Festival are joining forces to present a suitably euphoric and entertaining Victory in Europe 70th Anniversary Weekend to mark this momentous event, and we’re pitching in on Sunday 10th with our award-winning vintage fair.
Here is what we’re offering at our VE Day Fair on Sunday 10th:
★ Popular 1940s singer Maria Manchester singing wartime favourites.
★ Those titans of the shellac, Vintage 78 DJs, playing the Top 40 of the 40s (and selling a few pieces from their vast hoard of vintage goodies).
★ Military Vehicles Trust North West will be parking up some of their original wartime vehicles.
★ Planet Vintage Girl is bringing a VE Day themed backdrop and her celebrity friend Sock Monkey for photo opportunities!
And there will be a completely un-rationed and plentiful array of genuine vintage clothing and accessories for ladies and gentlemen, not to mention a veritable cornucopia of jewellery, furniture, homeware, luggage, textiles, decorative items, toys, books, collectables and curiosities from up to 70 specialist traders. No coupons necessary!
Suggested dress code: 1940s, obviously!
We’re not expecting you to skimp on refreshments either, with the epically wonderful Lord of the Pies, Fat Annies, NEW! Popscycle ices on a bike, and Stuart Thornley Cake Design on hand to tempt you with their wares.
And this is what Stockport Museum and Stockport Creative Festival will be presenting on the same day as our VE Day fair, around the Market Place:
★ Street performers and live music.
★ Home Front Canteen at the bottom of Park Street.
★ Fun Fair in Castle Yard.
★ Street parties - there is a free sitting at 11.00am on Sunday but you will need to book a place.
★ Vintage Beautique 1940s hair styling and make-up - book your 40s makeover here (a small fee will be charged).
★ Wellington Boot School Projects' 1940s garden farm, Shawcross Fold (behind Staircase House). Hold chicks and ducklings (weather permitting). Meet some animals that are looking for new homes, chat to the Land Girls about the care that these animals need and get advice about your own small pets. Free, but you will need to book here.
★ Heritage Bus from Museum of Transport Greater Manchester, Shawcross Fold. Book a free ride here.
★ Fireworks Finale at St Mary's Church at 3.00pm.
